Medical Assistant Career Pathway
The Medical Assistant Program at Greenville Technical College is designed to prepare students for professional success through hands-on training, practicum experience in physicians' offices and curriculum designed to enhance knowledge and proficiency. Graduates of this program are eligible to pursue the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
Students learn how to perform both administrative duties (including filing insurance, billing and coding and patient scheduling) and clinical duties (such as obtaining vital signs and patient histories, assisting with exams and sterile procedures, performing EKGs, pulmonary function tests and other screenings, collecting and processing CLIA-waived laboratory specimens and providing patient education).
The Medical Assistant Program produces graduates who are in high demand and ready for work.

Eligible students:
Available to students in 11th and 12th grade
Recommended courses:
Phase I of the Medical Assistant Program can be completed in High School
- AHS 102 Med Term
- BIO 112 or higher (BIO 210/211 or BIO 215/216)
- CPT 170 Microcomputer Applications
- ENG 101 English Composition
Must place into MAT 105
When:
Online or in-person courses are offered through Early College Monday through Thursday.
Where:
High school students take dual enrollment classes at Greenville Technical College.
Result:
High School Graduation + Ready to apply for and enter the Medical Assisting Program at GTCAFTER HIGH SCHOOL
After high school, students apply for and transition into Phase II of the Medical Assistant Program at Greenville Technical College. Completion of requirements for graduation in one year.

Result:
Graduates are awarded the Certificate in Applied Science Medical Assistant and could earn additional national certifications, including Certified Medical Assistant (CMA).
CMAs hold positions in medical practices, hospital-based outpatient clinics, ambulatory surgery centers and laboratories, with an average salary of $35,850 per year.
